The crew was not allowed to use any of the characters from Tarzan due to licensing issues. Gannaway and Craig also deliberately tried to avoid using characters from The Hunchback of Notre Dame due to them being "inherently dramatic",[22] nevertheless, Tantor, Quasimodo and a few other characters from The Hunchback of Notre Dame would make a couple of cameos in the series.

Patients in our women’s program are equipped with the tools they need to accept and internalize deeper truths that foster lifelong change. Unlike outpatient programs, our comfortable inpatient rehab allows our patients to stay overnight for a designated period of time at our bayside facility in South Padre Island, Texas. We offer various lengths of stay, including shorter stabilization programming and long-term residential treatment for women. Hannah’s House strives to provide health care excellence through continuous quality improvement. We maintain state-level licensure and national accreditation for the treatment of addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders. Sitting on a Zoom with Hannah Berner and Paige DeSorbo, I have to keep reminding myself that this is meant to be an active, three-way conversation, that I’m not just listening.
Cross-addictive behaviors may exacerbate one another and lead to further challenges. Traumatic life events — such as verbal, physical, or sexual abuse – can trigger PTSD. Women stay in our program for varying lengths of time, depending on their needs and how they progress through treatment. Our women’s addiction treatment center provides care that looks at every dimension of wellbeing, taking into account every woman’s past and the reasons that she has arrived at our doorstep.

The cornerstone was laid on October 13, 1792, and over the next eight years a construction team comprised of both enslaved and freed African Americans and European immigrants built the Aquia Creek sandstone structure.

Although the name “White House” was commonly used from about the same time (because the mansion’s white-gray sandstone contrasted strikingly with the red brick of nearby buildings), it did not become the official name of the building until 1901, when it was adopted by Pres. The White House is the oldest federal building in the nation’s capital. Our first president, George Washington, selected the site for the White House in 1791.

The center includes a new flagship retail store for the Association, featuring new and treasured items that support the Association's mission of enhancing the understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of the Executive Mansion. Early maps referred to the White House as the “President’s Palace,” but in 1810, the building was officially named “Executive Mansion” in order to avoid any connection to royalty. The residence has also been called “President’s House,” or “President’s Mansion.” In 1901, President Theodore Roosevelt changed the official name to “White House,” a moniker that had been used throughout the 19th century.

As a result, they forced local enslaved people to provide the labor, often renting workers from their masters for year-long periods of time. If you are staying in a hotel near the White House, or work nearby, you can simply walk over to the White House tour entrance. From the time you get in line to enter the White House, through security checkpoints and then your tour, you should assume you will be there for at least two hours though.
Statement by President Joe Biden on Armenian Remembrance Day
President George Washington, who lived in presidential residences in New York and Philadelphia, selected the site of the nation’s capital on the Potomac River for an executive mansion with the help of French architect Pierre Charles L’Enfant, who designed the plan of the city. L’Enfant initially proposed an opulent design for the residence, which would have resulted in a building four times the size of what stands today. He was ultimately dismissed by the three-person committee overseeing the development of the District of Columbia, and his palatial design was abandoned. Instead, Washington and his secretary of state, Thomas Jefferson, decided that the design would be chosen through a national competition. During the War of 1812 the building was burned by the British, and Pres. James Madison (1809–17) and his family were forced to flee the city.
Eight years later, in 1909, President William Howard Taft expanded the West Wing and created the first Oval Office, which was eventually moved and expanded. In the Executive Residence, the third floor attic was converted to living quarters in 1927 by augmenting the existing hip roof with long shed dormers. A newly constructed East Wing was used as a reception area for social events; Jefferson's colonnades connected the new wings. The East Wing alterations were completed in 1946, creating additional office space. By 1948, the residence's load-bearing walls and wood beams were found to be close to failure. Under Harry S. Truman, the interior rooms were completely dismantled and a new internal load-bearing steel frame was constructed inside the walls.
Biden’s speech, which lasted around 10 minutes, made no mention of the ongoing war or the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. But the president quickly segued to a grim speech about what he believes is at stake this election, saying that another Trump administration would be even more harmful to America than his first term. And how many politicians have met a photo op they didn’t want to seize for a messaging moment?
“I am killing this dinner harder than Kristi Noem kills the puppies,” Friend said in his Trump voice, riffing off the news that the Republican governor of South Dakota, in a forthcoming book, admits to shooting her 14-month-old dog because she was “untrainable” and aggressive. The only Trump spotted at this year’s festivities was daughter-in-law Lara Trump, recently crowned co-chair of the Republican National Committee. Her father-in-law wasn’t in the building, but comic impressionist Matt Friend emerged from the crowd with a Trump impersonation — as well as sendups of Bernie Sanders, Mitch McConnell and Obama. He also made the first (and, surprisingly, only) dead-dog joke of the night. Officially, the evening is nonpartisan, and the only toast of the night goes to the sitting president, regardless of party affiliation.

Citizens of a foreign countries can arrange tours through their embassy. “There had been a pool inside the White House added by Franklin Roosevelt that he would use as exercise for his polio, but later, Gerald Ford wanted an outdoor pool,” says Fling.
One organizer complained that the White House Correspondents’ Association — which represents the hundreds of journalists who cover the president — largely has been silent since the first weeks of the war about the killings of Palestinian journalists. Washington’s annual mashup of political humor and earnest paeans to the free press is typically a good-natured collection of one-liners and affectionate jabs at friends and enemies alike. But it was the leading 2024 presidential contenders who loomed largest — one in the Washington Hilton hotel ballroom, the other who definitely, positively, probably was not watching from Mar-a-Lago. In addition to constructing the buildings, enslaved individuals also worked the quarries where the stones for the government buildings came from. Ironically, the Statue of Freedom that sits atop the Capitol dome was made with the help of Philip Reid, a man enslaved by sculptor Thomas Crawford, who was commissioned to build the statue.

First Pets: Famous presidential companions
Each president adds their own personal style to the workspace, choosing artwork from the White House collection or borrowing from museums. Six desks have been used in the Oval Office, the most famous of which is the Resolute desk. Made of wood from the HMS Resolute, the desk is currently in use by President Biden. In 1800, President John Adams and first lady Abigail Adams moved into the still unfinished building on November 1. While it was much smaller than L’Enfant’s proposal, the completed building was still the largest home in the country and would retain that title until after the Civil War. According to the White House Historical Association, the cost of construction was $232,372.
The East Garden, also redesigned by Mellon, was later named in honor of Jacqueline Kennedy. First lady Michelle Obama added a 1,100-square-foot vegetable garden on the south grounds in 2009. A final major overhaul took place after Harry Truman entered office in 1945. With structural problems mounting from the 1902 installation of floor-bearing steel beams, most of the building’s interior was stripped bare as a new concrete foundation went in place. The Trumans helped redesign most of the state rooms and decorate the second and third floors, and the president proudly displayed the results during a televised tour of the completed house in 1952. William Taft hired architect Nathan Wyeth to expand the executive wing in 1909, resulting in the formation of the Oval Office as the president’s work space.
The following year, the cornerstone was laid and a design submitted by Irish-born architect James Hoban was chosen. After eight years of construction, President John Adams and his wife Abigail moved into the still-unfinished residence. During the War of 1812, the British set fire to the President’s House, and James Hoban was appointed to rebuild it. James Monroe moved into the building in 1817, and during his administration, the South Portico was constructed. Various proposals were put forward during the late 19th century to significantly expand the President’s House or to build an entirely new residence, but these plans were never realized.

If you aren’t traveling with a group, feel free to ask a fellow tour member to take your picture. Most people are in a jovial mood and happy to help you capture the moment. You can count on spending at least 45 minutes to an hour touring the White House. There is a one-way route, so you can’t get lost (they won’t let you). The White House Historical Association also has a small shop on the tour route where you can pick up souvenirs. You may request more than one ticket, but be prepared with each person’s legal identification information once your request is approved.
Ralliers cried “Free, free Palestine.” They cheered when at one point someone inside the Washington Hilton — where the dinner has been held for decades — unfurled a Palestinian flag from a top-floor hotel window. To get inside Saturday’s dinner, some guests had to hurry through hundreds of protesters outraged over the mounting humanitarian disaster for Palestinian civilians in Gaza. They condemned Biden for his support of Israel’s military campaign and Western news outlets for what they said was undercoverage and misrepresentation of the conflict.

Doug Mills of the Times got the award for visual journalism for a striking photo of Biden, and the award for courage and accountability went to The Washington Post for coverage on the impact of assault rifles and mass shootings. Jost finished his remarks by telling President Joe Biden about his 95-year-old grandfather, a longtime fireman in Staten Island, N.Y, who voted Democrat in the 2020 presidential election even though that borough of New York City is known to favor Republicans. The White House is the official residence of the United States President, located in Washington, DC. Commissioners originally tried to bring cheap workers over from Europe to build the new capital, their recruitment efforts fell short.

The White House is both the home and workplace of the president of the United States, and it is the headquarters of the president’s principal staff members. We'll be in touch with the latest information on how President Biden and his administration are working for the American people, as well as ways you can get involved and help our country build back better. On May 20, 1995, primarily as a response to the Oklahoma City bombing of April 19, 1995, the United States Secret Service closed off Pennsylvania Avenue to vehicular traffic in front of the White House, from the eastern edge of Lafayette Park to 17th Street. Later, the closure was extended an additional block to the east to 15th Street, and East Executive Avenue, a small street between the White House and the Treasury Building. The wallpaper had hung previously on the walls of another mansion until 1961 when that house was demolished for a grocery store.
Stringent security measures are in place for when members of the public visit the White House. Visitors should be prepared for thorough security screenings on the day of your tour, and information about prohibited items and guidelines can be found on the official tour page. Public tour requests must be submitted through a Member of Congress.
Visitors who wish to use a White House wheelchair should notify a U.S. After September 11, 2001, this change was made permanent, in addition to closing E Street between the South Portico of the White House and the Ellipse.[109] In response to the Boston Marathon bombing, the road was closed to the public in its entirety for a period of two days. The 2024 White House Correspondents’ Dinner was held at the Washington Hilton. It’s also a museum of American history—and a place where that history continues to unfold every day. President's Park, which includes the park lands surrounding the White House, is composed of approximately 82 acres and is home for many significant statues, memorials and structures which give context to our lives today. According to a preliminary investigation released Friday by the Committee to Protect Journalists, nearly 100 journalists have been killed covering the war in Gaza. Israel has defended its actions, saying it has been targeting militants. Celebrities included Academy Award winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Scarlett Johansson, Jon Hamm and Chris Pine. Despite being similar in age, Biden said, the two presidential hopefuls have little else in common.
After the tragic events of September 11, 2001, White House tour tickets became available through Congressional offices and embassies. No longer a center for ticket distribution, the White House Visitor Center evolved to serve visitors' educational and informational needs. As time passed, the static exhibits became outdated and, in the late 2000s, planning began for a new facility that would include engaging, interactive exhibits. The building’s South and North Porticoes were added in 1824 and 1829, respectively, while John Quincy Adams established the residence’s first flower garden. When Chester A. Arthur took office in 1881, he ordered renovations to the White House to take place as soon as the recently widowed Lucretia Garfield moved out.
